Purpose of the Presentation

To provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Artificial Intelligence

(AI), examine its impact on Africa, explore the relationship between Artificial

Intelligence and African Intelligence, and encourage responsible, ethical, and

innovative use of AI for sustainable development.

Objectives The presentation aimed to:

 Discover how Artificial Intelligence is shaping Africa's future.

 Explore the opportunities and challenges of AI across different sectors,

especially education and governance.

 Discuss the importance of African intelligence, creativity, culture, and

innovation in the AI era.

 Encourage participants to use AI responsibly while preserving human dignity

and African values.

 Promote dialogue on Burundi's readiness to implement its National Artificial

Intelligence Strategy.

Section A: Background to the Activity

Artificial Intelligence has become one of the most transformative technologies of the

21st century. Since its inception approximately seventy years ago, AI has

revolutionized education, healthcare, business, governance, communication, and

scientific research. African countries are increasingly embracing AI to accelerate

development while ensuring that technological innovation aligns with local cultures,

ethics, and values.

The presentation was organized at American Corner Kamenge to equip young

people, students, educators, and professionals with knowledge about Artificial

Intelligence and to compare AI with African Intelligence. The activity also highlighted

Burundi's recently approved National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, adopted on 12

April 2026 in collaboration with UNDP Burundi (PNUD Burundi) and the Ministry of

Finance.

A total of 31 participants attended the event, including 28 men and 3 women,

representing students, religious leaders, journalists, educators, and young

professionals.

Participants came from different educational and professional backgrounds, creating

a rich environment for discussion and exchange of ideas.

Section C: Content

i. Summary of Proceedings

The presentation began with an introduction to Artificial Intelligence, including its

definition, historical development, and evolution since its creation in 1956.

Participants learned how AI is increasingly transforming modern society by

supporting decision-making, improving productivity, automating routine tasks, and

solving complex problems.

The facilitator explained the opportunities AI presents in education, including

personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, research support, language

translation, and improved access to educational resources. Participants also

discussed challenges such as misinformation, unemployment due to automation,

privacy concerns, cybersecurity risks, bias in AI systems, and ethical issues.

The session further examined Africa;s position in the global AI race. Countries such

as South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Egypt, and Morocco were presented as

continental leaders investing in AI research, innovation, digital infrastructure, and

public policy. While Africa still contributes a relatively small share of global AI

development, the continent possesses enormous potential through its youthful

population and growing digital ecosystem.

Special attention was given to the role of African youth in driving innovation through

entrepreneurship, research, software development, and responsible use of emerging

technologies.

The second part of the presentation focused on African Intelligence, defined as the

collective wisdom, creativity, indigenous knowledge, ethical values, cultural heritage,

and problem-solving capacity developed by African societies over generations.

Participants explored how African Intelligence complements technological

advancement by emphasizing humanity, solidarity, ethics, and cultural identity.

The facilitator also discussed threats to African Intelligence, including excessive

dependence on foreign technologies, loss of cultural identity, misinformation, digital

inequality, and unethical use of AI.

Participants compared Artificial Intelligence and African Intelligence, concluding that

AI should support—not replace—human intelligence. While AI processes large

amounts of information quickly and efficiently, human intelligence remains essential

for moral judgment, creativity, empathy, leadership, and cultural understanding.

The presentation concluded by emphasizing that Africa's future depends not only on

adopting AI but also on preserving African values, creativity, ethics, and innovation.

ii. Context and Open Discussion

The presentation generated an engaging discussion among participants regarding

the relationship between technology, ethics, governance, and religion.

Pastor Nitunga Willy from Église du Rocher observed that Christians cannot avoid

Artificial Intelligence because it has become a tool used in nearly every sector of

society. However, he warned that excessive dependence and misuse of AI could lead

people to neglect faith and forget the power of God. He encouraged responsible and

ethical use of technology while maintaining strong spiritual values.

Student N. Bruce proposed that AI systems should manage financial institutions to

reduce corruption, increase transparency, and improve efficiency. However, he

argued that moral and ethical decisions should remain under human responsibility

because such decisions require wisdom, conscience, empathy, and critical thinking

beyond the capabilities of machines.

Following the presentation, participants proposed that the Government of Burundi

consider learning from Albania's example by appointing Diella, an Artificial

Intelligence system, to support public administration as a Minister of State. While this

suggestion stimulated debate, participants emphasized that AI should complement

human leadership rather than replace democratic governance.

Participants also announced the creation of an awareness platform called Team Bdi,

dedicated to promoting responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in Burundi. They

explained that when AI is used responsibly, it contributes to national development;

when misused, it can become what they humorously described as "Alcoholic

Intelligence," distracting people from ethical values and compromising human

dignity. The platform seeks to encourage responsible innovation while preserving

African Intelligence and respect for humanity.

iii. Outputs of the Activity

The implementation of the activity produced several immediate results:

 Thirty-one participants gained increased knowledge of Artificial Intelligence

and African Intelligence.

 Participants developed a better understanding of AI opportunities and

challenges in education, governance, journalism, and society.

 Increased awareness was created regarding Burundi's National Artificial

Intelligence Strategy.

 Participants actively exchanged ideas concerning ethical AI adoption.

 The Team Bdi awareness platform was introduced to promote responsible AI

use.

 Strong networking opportunities were established among students,

professionals, journalists, educators, and religious leaders.

iv. Outcomes

Immediate Outcomes

 Participants demonstrated improved understanding of responsible AI use.

 Increased interest in AI research, innovation, and entrepreneurship among

young people.

 Greater appreciation of African Intelligence as an essential complement to

Artificial Intelligence.

 Increased awareness of ethical considerations in AI development and

deployment.

 Expected Long-term Outcomes

 Stronger digital literacy among Burundian youth.

 Greater participation in AI innovation and research.

 Increased collaboration between educational institutions, government

agencies, and civil society.

 Responsible implementation of Burundi's National AI Strategy.

 Promotion of ethical AI policies that preserve African cultural values and

human dignity.

Section D: Evaluation, Best Practice, and Other Observations

J. Were the objectives met?

Yes. The objectives were successfully achieved. Participants gained a solid

understanding of Artificial Intelligence, explored Africa;s opportunities and challenges

in AI, compared Artificial Intelligence with African Intelligence, and actively

participated in discussions concerning ethics, governance, education, and

responsible innovation. The interactive discussions demonstrated high participant

engagement and critical thinking.

K. Lessons Learned

Several important lessons emerged from the activity:

 Artificial Intelligence should complement rather than replace human

intelligence.

 Ethical values remain fundamental in AI development.

 African knowledge, culture, and creativity are valuable assets in shaping AI

solutions.

 Young people are eager to embrace AI when provided with proper guidance

and education.

 Multi-sector dialogue involving educators, religious leaders, students,

journalists, and policymakers enriches understanding of emerging

technologies.

L. Challenges and Suggested Solutions

Challenges

 Limited awareness of Artificial Intelligence among many participants.

 Inadequate digital infrastructure.

 Limited access to AI training resources.

 Concerns about ethical misuse of AI.

 Gender imbalance among participants.

Suggested Solutions

 Organize regular AI awareness workshops across Burundi.

 Increase investment in digital infrastructure and internet connectivity.

 Integrate AI education into school and university curricula.

 Develop national ethical guidelines for AI.

 Encourage greater participation of women and girls in technology-related

programs.

M. Additional Requirements

To maximize future impact, the following are recommended:

 Continued collaboration between government institutions, universities, civil

society organizations, and development partners.

 Provision of AI training materials and practical workshops.

 Support for innovation hubs and youth-led AI initiatives.

 Establishment of mentorship programs connecting AI experts with young

innovators.

 Strengthened public awareness campaigns on responsible Artificial

Intelligence.

Section E: Next Key Steps

The following actions are recommended following the presentation:

1. Organize advanced AI training sessions for students and professionals.

2. Expand the Team Bdi awareness initiative throughout Burundi.

3. Support implementation of Burundi's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

4. Encourage research on AI solutions addressing local development challenges.

5. Promote partnerships between educational institutions, technology companies,

government agencies, and civil society organizations.

6. Conduct follow-up seminars focusing on AI ethics, governance,

entrepreneurship, and innovation.

7. Encourage continuous public dialogue to ensure Artificial Intelligence

advances human dignity while strengthening African Intelligence.

Conclusion

The presentation successfully highlighted both the transformative potential of Artificial

Intelligence and the enduring importance of African Intelligence. Participants

concluded that Africas future should not be based solely on technological

advancement but also on preserving ethics, cultural identity, creativity, and human

dignity. Artificial Intelligence should remain a powerful tool that serves humanity,

while African Intelligence provides the wisdom, values, and leadership needed to

guide its responsible use for sustainable development across Burundi and the African

continent.
