Burundi : Female Genital Mutilation

Bujumbura, February 7th,2024 , Gako News (Blog) Even though female genital mutilation seems to be an unknown cultural practice in Burundi, some young people are doubting this human right violation still live and well.

I am really afraid of some parents who think they are stopping their young girls to make sexual intercourses by mutilation of their clitoris. As sex still tabou in Burundi this practice may happens in some borders's area, said one participant to the discussion about female genital mutilation.
On the 6th February, the UN SG Antonio Guterres said more than 4 millions  of girls are on the risk of  female genital mutilation across the world.  He said ' Even on mutilation is one too many'' to mark zero tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation-FGM.
Scholars  such as Aisha Adon said this worst practice had been experienced in 29 countries across the world and 10125 millions of girls and women are victims.

Aissa Edon, a young  African woman who was mutilated at the age 11 before she was sent to France where she met someone who has turned her painful life in hope. She finally built an FGM Hope Clinic. She said FMG should be a business for any one. Likewise  Antonio she regreted  that FGM involves the removal of or injury to female genital female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

The FGM is celebrated on February 6th of every year. Scholars , local , regional and international officials take opportunity to vividly warm this cultural practice which consists of cutting clitoris of a  teenager girl. It creates emotional, psychological and social challenge for any girl who is mutilated.

I am really afraid of some parents who think they are stopping their young girls to make sexual intercourses by mutilation of their clitoris. As sex still tabou in Burundi this practice may happens in some borders's area, said one participant.

Comparing to what is happening with young girls in Buyenzi Zone who prepare their marriage ceremony  where young girls learn how to really enjoy sex with their future husbands, the kunyonga ptactice as it was published by Yaga, the FGM may happens in Burundi said a young women from Rugombo, Cibitoke Province , nearest Rwanda border where  the practice of gukuna is an other dangerous cultural practice.

The practicers say that gukuna facilitates the  kunyaza practice and both of them are frequent in Burundi, Tanzania and Rwanda. A young man who had sexual intercourses with an FGM victim said that there is no ''Swingi'' as it is for normal girl or woman. The victim doesn't enjoy and seems as if she was raped, he warmed.
